About Us - LWV North County San Diego

Who We Are

The League operates on a national, state and local level.

The League of Women Voters (LWV) is a national, grassroots, network and membership organization that believes the right to vote is a non-partisan issue.    For over 100 years, we have worked to empower voters and defend democracy.

Your local league, the League of Women Voters of North County San Diego, was formed when a group of civic-minded North County women came together over 60 years ago, in 1962, to form the first local league.  Eventually the League grew to encompass all of North County from Del Mar north to Oceanside and Vista, and east to Escondido, and surrounding unincorporated communities.  League members represent all 8 cities in North County and 12 communities.

The League of Women Voters is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation.  The League adheres to a strict nonpartisan policy and never endorses any political party, candidate or elected official.

What Do League Members Do?

The LWVNCSD strives to keep the residents of North County informed about local elections and policy issues that affect our community.  We monitor local jurisdictions to promote good governance and transparency and we offer events throughout the year to educate members and the public about important issues facing the community.

Our League members
  • observe our local governments and may recommend action based on League principles and positions;
  • study issues to enable members to reach consensus and create an informed position on which to take action;
  • educate ourselves and the public, particularly before an election;
  • register voters and provide nonpartisan information on election-related matters.
Members generally meet monthly in committees focused on a particular issue, activity or geographic area.  Members can attend unit meetings, which are devoted to particular areas, such as the
  • San Dieguito Unit, covering Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas and Rancho Santa Fe.
  • Carlsbad Unit, focused on the City of Carlsbad
  • Oceanside Unit, which is currently inactive

Issue-related committees include Climate Change,  Water Policy,  Housing & Homelessness, and Criminal Justice.  A Voter Service committee, Candidate Forum committee and Pros and Cons Committee provide education, resources and outreach for all things related to elections and voting.

A Little Bit of History...

The League of Women Voters of North County San Diego has a proud history stretching back more than 65 years. Founded in April 1961 as the League of Women Voters of San Dieguito — a provisional League — it was later renamed the League of Women Voters of North Coast San Diego County before taking its current name. Over the decades, the League has grown to encompass all of North County, from Del Mar north to Oceanside and Vista and east to Escondido, representing members across 8 cities and 12 communities.

The League's strength has always come from its leaders. We honor the women who have served as President and guided this organization through more than six decades of civic engagement, voter empowerment, and community advocacy.
