The League of Women Voters has long held positions on climate change and on environmental protection that ”support the preservation of the physical, chemical and biological integrity of the ecosystem, with maximum protection of public health and the environment”. Over many decades, oil spills off the coasts of California, Alaska, and in the Gulf of Mexico have shown the immense environmental and economic problems with offshore oil drilling.
California’s coastal economy produces approximately $41.9 billion in gross domestic product each year and employs almost half a million people. The construction for drilling purposes, both on and offshore, as well as the potential for disastrous oil spills, could harm the state’s multibillion-dollar coastal economy, including tourism, fishing and the marine ecosystem.
The LWVNCSD joins the growing numbers of local and county organizations, government officials, and citizens who oppose any opening of California coastal waters to new offshore drilling.
We thank you for considering this resolution and urge you to support it.
Sincerely
Marian Vega Clancy, President. LWVNCSD
