The arrest of a parent by ICE at an elementary school in North County shocked the neighborhood. Even more shocking is that this was the third time in recent weeks that ICE agents snatched a parent bringing to or picking up a child at school, causing trauma to the children present and spreading fear among parents and educators.
ICE's daily quotas policy for round-ups is leading to detention and deportation of people with no criminal record who contribute in a positive way to our society. Recent research has shown that 67% of ICE detainees this year have no criminal record (Marshall Project report).
The Leagues of Women Voters of San Diego and of North County San Diego denounce these violations of constitutional principles and human dignity. We support the right of all individuals to fair treatment under the law, including due process, a fair hearing and appeal, and humane treatment.
