Civil Discourse

Many lament the breakdown of civil public discourse in our society, but feel powerless to change the tenor of the debate.   The League is in a unique position to go beyond our good example of modeling civil discourse. This interest group will examine options, investigate partnerships, and suggest actions to advocate for civility in our community, state and nation. Contact Mary Thompson for further information.

Natural Resources

(formerly Sustainability Group)
As the world population grows, natural resources become limited, and climate warming has become the new reality. We all need to lead sustainable lifestyles. We must plan and act to create long-term environmental, social and economic vitality in our communities. We consider that local governments are in a pivotal position to lead and encourage the changes that need to occur. This year we will release the Sustainability Survey Report based upon the 2010 survey results. We will also create questions for our third biennial Sustainability Survey of cities within our league, which will be undertaken next year. We anticipate the survey will promote sustainable measures and legislation in local governments as well as provide our league with great visibility.

Several exciting field trips are planned for the new year. Check the Calendar for the most up to date information.

We also hope to keep abreast of local sustainability events, news and best practices. Please join us if you'd like to learn, educate, or advocate in this very important area. Please contact Diane Mochizuki if you would like further information.

Women's Issues

This discussion group has learned that if you ask a question, the group can formulate an answer. Realizing the breadth of issues affecting women today, we have many questions that engage us in discussion. These raise our awareness and encourage us to advocate on behalf of women's issues. Our topics and themes include: equal pay for equal work, women's health demands, working families' concerns, women's rights and advancement, women's roles in public service and leadership roles. Come and join us with your concerns and views. Enjoy one and a half hours of engaging conversation with other League members.

For information, contact Evelina Hamilton.

Media Monitors

(formerly FCC Group)
Our purpose is to monitor the FCC in order to keep members informed on key issues that affect all of us. Our focus includes such subjects as Internet neutrality, media consolidation, the auctioning of the spectrum, and the regulation of cable companies. Individual members of the group keep tabs on various aspects of FCC activity and inform the group of new developments or emerging issues. As the FCC covers such a broad range of services, we can always use new members to follow the rapid developments in many areas under their jurisdiction.
